Donna Jean Godchaux

Donna Jean GodchauxBorn in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Donna Jean was a vocalist at both Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Fame Studios, home of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound, on records like Elvis Presleys Suspicious Minds,Percy Sledge’s When a Man Loves a Woman, and Boz Scagg’s eponymous first solo album.

Godchaux  then finally moved to the West Coast. She worked with a group of backup singers (Jeannie Green and Ginger and Mary Holladay) who called themselves Southern Comfort and is credited as Donna Thatcher on Cher’s 1969 release 3614 Jackson Highway, as well as on Elvis Presley’s From Elvis in Memphis and Elvis Back in Memphis albums, among others.

She married Keith Godchaux, and spent the 1970s as a vocalist in the Grateful Dead as well as the Jerry Garcia Band.  As the only woman officially billed as a member of the Grateful Dead, Donna Jean Godchaux held her own on-stage with the rest of the boys.

After life with the Dead, she and Keith created the Heart of Gold Band with drummer Greg Anton and guitarist Steve Kimock.

However, her history as a singer isn’t relegated to jam band history. Her backing vocals can be found on all kinds of records before and after her stint with the Dead.


MARK KARAN,  Special Guest, Vocals and Guitar

Mark Karan is best known for performing with the members of  the Grateful Dead family. For the last twelve years, he has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins.

KENNY BROOKS, Special Guest , saxophone

He joined Bob Weir’s (Grateful Dead) band Ratdog in 2000 and has been playing with them ever since.

Kenny Brooks’ story began in Oakland, Ca., where he was inspired to play reed instruments from the age of 9. After graduating from El Cerrito H.S. in 1984 he went directly to the New England Conservatory at age 17. There he studied with master saxophonist George Garzone and other notable faculty including George Russell, Bob Moses and Ken Radnofsky. Brooks received his B.M. in ’88 and returned to the Bay Area in ’89.  

His work in the early 90′s included the Peck Allmond Group, the afro-pop group Kotoja and the start of his long-term association with legendary drummer Eddie Marshall. 1991 was the birth year of Brooks’ groundbreaking hip/hop-jazz band Alphabet Soup. Co-founded with pianist Dred Scott, Alphabet Soup remains one of San Francisco’s most popular bands. Alphabet Soup was the first hip/hop-jazz group at both the Monterey and San Francisco Jazz Festivals. In 1992 he recorded with his hero and teacher Joe Henderson on Kitty Margolis’ CD “Evolution”.

In 1994 Kenny Brooks and Charlie Hunter began a run of almost 3 years playing duo and trio every Friday night at the SOMA nightspot the Up and Down Club.  In 1996 Brooks joined the Charlie Hunter Quartet. They recorded the CD “Natty Dread” for Blue Note and toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada andEurope. By 1995 Brooks was leading a trio under his own name with Eddie Marshall and top Bay Area bassist Jeff Chambers. Brooks played at the Monterey Jazz Festival in ’83, ’89, ’90, ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94, ’95 and ’99.

He has played and recorded with many notable musicians such as Mike Clark, Ohio Players, Steve Smith, Les Claypool, MMW, String Cheese Incident, and Josh Roseman. In 2006 he recorded on Chuck MacKinnon’s new CD as well as DJ Teeko’s “My Soundstation” and appearing with Teeko’s 41Funk Jam Band.  

Moving to NYC in 2007 opened up a whole new world of musical opportunities including work with Anthony Pinciotti’s Green Lotus Project, Brian Charette, Levon Helm and many others. Brooks can be heard regularly at places like the 55 Bar, Small’s, Rockwood Music Hall and others.

David MacKay

David MacKay David hails from Marin County, California. As part of the emerging Bay Area music scene of the 70’s, he was a founding member of the popular band the “Tasmanian Devils” and recorded and toured with Michael Nesmith, playing bass on the first Grammy-winning video, “Elephant Parts.” He was a member of both the original and reformed “Heart of Gold Band.” Most recently, he has played bass with the Muscle Shoals-based group “The Fiddleworms.”

Joe Chirco

Joe ChircoJoe Chirco knew he was born to be a drummer from the Christmas Day, aged five, that he received his first drum set. What makes him positively unique among drummers has been his need to play in many different genres. As most working musicians do, he’s a member of a number of different bands – but few could list bands that have Jazz, Latin, Reggae, and Rock as their main styles. This subtle versatility, along with the soulful power that every rock band needs, has brought him to the DJGBwJM.

Freeman White

Freeman WhiteFreeman came from a musical family, and began his musical journeys at the age of 4, with private instruction that lasted well into aduldthood. He started playing professionally at the age of 15. His years of playing have taken him around the world, and have given him the opportunity to share the stage with some of his musical idols. His love of vintage equipment makes for an authentic, warm addition to the band’s sound. Vocally, he adds the “top” end to any arranagement, or “drives the bus” with powerful, heartfelt leads.
