Chris Poland’s PolCat with special guest Percy Jones (Brand X, Tunnels) & Frank Catalano
You may have heard the name “Chris Poland” before. Poland is probably best known for his phenomenal guitar work with several major label bands includingMEGADETH (Capitol Records) and his progressive metal band, DAMN THE MACHINE (A&M Records), as well as his solo cds: Return to Metalopolis (1990),Chasing the Sun (1999), and Rare Trax (1999) and highly sought-after session work (Lamb of God, Jeff Loomis). He even worked on some music with famed rapper, ICE-T for his Body Count project in 1990. Poland has been acknowledged by all of the major guitar publications as one of the greatest and most unique rock guitar players of our time. Gliding from unusually flowing chordings to technical oddities and inspiring leads, Poland’s incredible use of legato and tremolo bar combined with his bizarre scaling create an exotic flow of notes which somehow create order from chaos. Poland’s addictive sound and incredible tone is truly his own in a world of players struggling to find their identities on the instrument.
In addition to his main group, OHM:, Poland keeps busy with several side-projects, including OHMPHREY (featuring members of famed jamband, Umphrey’s McGee) and PolCat (featuring Grammy-nominated sax player, Frank Catalano), who have found their way to The Iridium this week.Four of the jazz world’s most unique artists coming together to find a common ground. That is what created PolCat. The band consists of the astounding talents of fusion guitar icon Chris Poland (OHM:/OHMPHREY/Megadeth/Damn the Machine/Return to Metalopolis), Grammy-nominated sax giant Frank Catalano (Miles Davis, Beyonce’ to Bennett, Randy Brecker, and everything in between), internationally-acclaimed solo artist/bassist Sean O’Bryan Smith (Larry Carlton to Keith Urban and other parts unknown), and drum phenomenon Jim Gifford (Guthrie Govan, Bill “Buddha” Dickens, Roy Vogt, and more).
PolCat takes their extremely diverse backgrounds of solo performance coupled with a musical repertoire spanning every inch of the music industry to create their own take on the next step in contemporary jazz fusion. Four composers, locked in a room, and created pure music from its most basic properties. The chemistry was instant and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.The 7/21 & 7/22 PolCat shows are also very special as legendary fretless bassist, Percy Jones (Brand X, Tunnels) will be a special guest. Jones, a true pioneer on the fretless bass who’s unique approach influenced everyone from Jaco Pastorius to Michael Manring. Furthermore, Sean O’Bryan Smith is being replaced by incredible OHM:/OHMPHREY bassist, Robby Pagliari for these PolCat shows. The excitement continues on Monday, 7/23, as Chris Poland and the Les Paul Trio will be joined by special guests Percy Jones (Brand X, Tunnels), Mike DiMeo (The Lizards, Riot, Masterplan), and PolCat members Frank Catalano, Jim Gifford, and Robby Pagliari for a different musical stew that is sure to be unique and exciting. There is no doubt that you won’t want to miss any of these three shows. Each will be a night of incredible music, musicianship, that is a once in a lifetime experience.
