In an historic meeting of pedal steel guitarists, Chuck Campbell, who has been called ‘the Jimi Hendrix and the Django Reinhardt of the steel guitar meets double Grammy Award winning co-founder of Asleep at the Wheel Lucky Oceans, who travels all the way from Australia to play this gig.
Chuck is a scion of the Sacred Steel African American pedal steel guitar movement, whose mastery of multiple styles has made him a teacher and role model to many of the younger Sacred Steel players. As one of the Campbell Brothers, he is spreading the gospel of Sacred Steel to the wider world.
Lucky’s album ‘Secret Steel’ was called ‘A head-spinning, genre-dissolving album of deliciously bent notes and reimagined “sacred steel” rave-ups by Richard Gehr in the ‘Village Voice.’ With a vast knowledge of music stemming from 21 years of being the Australian Broadcasting Corporations leading music presenter, he breaks down the barriers between musical genres with startling immediacy.
Chuck and Lucky get together to play informally every few years but they have never performed for a paid audience. They’ll be joined by the consummate bassist Tony Garnier– Lucky’s bandmate in Asleep at the Wheel and Bob Dylan’s longest serving band member by far, straight from a European tour with Dylan and by Diego Voglino, the fine drummer who played with Lucky at his last NYC appearance.
This promises to be a unique night as Chuck and Lucky, the great synthesizers of steel guitar traditions, play together in a once only show. Don’t miss it!
