Allman Brothers Keep It Going In Times Square
By: George Whipple
For those looking to continue their Allman Brothers experience, Iridium Jazz Club in Times Square is the place to be during the month of March.
Opening night featured Gregg Allman’s son, Devon and his band, Honey Tribe.
Devon, like every good child of the 1960s, rebeled, but this time against the rebels.
“Yeah, I spent a lot of years kind of fighting my heritage in a way,” said Allman. “I wanted to do anything but this style and I realized if I just play with feeling and I sing with soul, you know, I sound a little in that vein, you know, that’s okay.”
Devon’s new CD draws upon his musical roots.
“Curtis Mayfield, Jimi Hendricks, Rolling Stones, Z.Z. Top, it doesn’t seem like there’s much of that anymore,” says the younger Allman. “You know, we want to be a part of keeping it alive.”
While better known as a jazz club, Iridium also has deep roots into the guitar scene. Les Paul played here for 14 years.
“So we started to segue into more of a guitar-oriented venue and the Allman Brothers are a southern rock guitar jam band, so we felt that we should represent this genre of music as well,” said Iridium’s owner Ron Sturm.
And Devon Allman is part of that legend.
“The last time I played here, I played with Mr. Les Paul and he signed my Les Paul and that was just an incredible night,” said Allman.
Midnight Madness is the official after party to the Allman Brothers concert all during March. So if you can’t get a ticket to see the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater, come on down to Iridium at midnight and enjoy the after party after the show.
